Application
- File Form N 400 up to 90 days before meeting the five year residence mark.
- Attend biometrics appointment.
- Complete USCIS interview covering eligibility, English, and civics.
Oath of Allegiance Ceremony
Final step in naturalization, conducted by USCIS or a federal judge.
Pledge includes:
- Support for the Constitution and U.S. laws.
- Renunciation of foreign allegiances or titles.
- Commitment to national service (bearing arms or equivalent) when lawfully required.
Successful applicant receives a Certificate of Naturalisation and may apply immediately for a U.S. passport.
Rights Gained
- Vote in all federal, state, and local elections.
- Apply for a U.S. passport and receive consular protection abroad.
- Run for elective office at federal (except President/Vice‑President) and state level, subject to constitutional qualifications.
- Serve on juries and hold certain federal jobs and security clearances.
- Petition additional family (parents, married children, siblings) for immigrant visas.
- Protection from deportation, except if citizenship was obtained fraudulently.
Ongoing Responsibilities
- Obey all laws, pay taxes, serve on juries when summoned.
- Register to vote and update registration when relocating.
- Travel with U.S. passport and use it for re‑entry.
