States Requiring Emissions Tests
- Examples: California, Colorado, Illinois (select counties), Arizona, Nevada, Maryland, New Jersey, Connecticut, Georgia (metro Atlanta), Wisconsin, Indiana.
- Frequency: Annual or biennial, often in urban areas with air quality regulations.
- Details: Required for vehicles in specific counties or regions (e.g., California’s smog check for most vehicles over 8 years old). Fees are ~$20–$70.
States with No Inspections
- Examples: Florida (for most vehicles), Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Arkansas, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana.
- Note: Even in these states, VIN verification may be required for title transfers or out-of-state vehicles.
