EVERY STATE IS LIKE A DIFFERENT COUNTRY!

Don’t Break the Law

Always drive with a valid, current driver’s license and non-expired car tags. Never operate a vehicle if you’ve been drinking or are impaired by any substance, as these are serious offenses in the U.S. Always wear a seatbelt, and ensure children are secured in appropriate car seats if under the required age, as mandated by state laws.

Tolls and Fees

Not every interstate is a toll road—there will be a clear indication if you are about to enter a toll road

  • Toll Roads: Common on interstates, bridges, and tunnels, especially in the Northeast, Midwest, and Florida. Payment methods include:
  • Cash: Some toll booths accept cash, but this is declining.
  • Electronic Transponders: Devices like E-ZPass (Northeast/Midwest), SunPass (Florida), or TxTag (Texas) deduct tolls automatically.
  • License Plate Billing: Cameras capture plates, and bills are mailed (often with higher fees).
  • Florida Tolls: Many highways (e.g., Florida’s Turnpike, I-95 express lanes) are tolled. SunPass is widely used ($4.99–$19.99 for transponder). Without SunPass, expect “Toll-by-Plate” invoices with added fees.
  • Costs: Tolls range from $0.50–$20 per segment, depending on distance and state. Budget $10–$50/day for heavy toll areas.
  • Interoperability: Some transponders work across states (e.g., SunPass is compatible with E-ZPass in 19 states).
