Labour unions representing the majority of Eskom’s workforce have rejected the power utility’s offer to increase their members’ salaries by 3.5% and are demanding hikes of up to 15%. Eskom has been engaged in wage negotiations with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), and Solidarity since early November 2025. These unions represent Eskom’s bargaining council workers, which make up about two-thirds of the power utility’s staff. The other two main categories of staff are managers and executives.
